Greasy Hair Causes: 9 Ways To Prevent Oily Hair

Is greasy hair and the itchiness it carries making you feel self-conscious, uncomfortable?  The sebaceous glands in your scalp produce sebum to keep your hair healthy, smooth and prevent it from drying out and breaking. When these glands get overactive, it can cause your hair to look greasy and outbreaks dandruff too.

Common causes of greasy hair and what you can do about it.

1. Touching your hair too much with fingertips

✔ Always touching your hair transfers oils from your fingertips to your hair strands. This could stimulate your oil glands and make your hair greasy too soon.
✔ Resist the urge to touch your hair for its own good.

2. Washing hair too many times

✔ Shampooing too much strips your scalp of its natural oils – so it produces more to replace them.
✔ Wash your hair every other day at least, or 2/3 times a week. Doing so could help to balance out oil production and reduce greasiness.

3. Brushing your hair often

✔ Brushing your hair too much can increase oil production in your scalp, making it look greasy.
✔ Say NO to obsessive hair brushing habits.

4. A dirty hairbrush

✔ If your hairbrush is not kept clean, it can transfer the dirt to your hair, making it feel untidy and eventually greasy.
✔ Clean your hairbrush regularly.

5. Using wrong hair products

✔ Your hair is unique, so should be your products. Choosing incompatible hair products results in too much oil production that can lead to seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that causes red, scaly patches to form on the scalp, along with dandruff that is difficult to get rid of.
✔ Products that claim to smooth, nourish, and condition the hair may make the greasiness worse. Try avoiding such products.

6. Try Dry Shampoo

✔ Dry shampoo prevents hair from becoming oily. Dry shampoo works by soaking up excess oil from the hair.
✔ Replace your shampoo with a dry one.

7. Use less conditioner

✔ Conditioner can cause oils to build up more quickly, adding to the greasy look of a person’s hair.
✔ Apply conditioner only to the ends of your hair to keep them from drying out. Make sure to rinse thoroughly after application.

8. Avoid hair styling products

✔ Hair straighteners and blow drying make your hair look greasy more quickly than if it was just left to dry naturally.
✔Avoiding them will also protect hair from heat damage.

9. Avoid hair-oil massages

✔ Since your scalp is already making its own oils naturally, adding any other oils into the mix can really just create a buildup and, therefore, greasiness.
✔ Reduce hair oil massages. Apply hair oils like olive oil, coconut oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil only for about 1-2 hours before shower. Oiling and leaving it overnight will make your condition worse.
